Last week we talked about finding an outlet in either light exercise or a creative pastime to ease the symptoms of fibromyalgia, and I hope you’ve found some time to explore those options. This week I’m so happy to share with you my absolute number-one tip on how to deal with the symptoms of this condition (or any other condition, for that matter):
Tip #6: Take a class on emotional freedom technique, also known as “tapping”, somewhere locally. If you’re in the Orange County area, you can come to one of my workshops that I hold about once a month—if you don’t see one on the schedule, you can email me and remind me to set another one up! Tapping was originally known as Thought Field Therapy (TFT), as developed by Roger Callahan, PhD, and then modified by Gary Craig and called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). We name our easy-to-use method Natural Bio De-Stressing (NBD), which is a hybrid of the two with what we think are helpful additions to the process. NBD is natural, works because of our biological wiring and helps us to de-stress and feel better. It is useful for any emotion, memory or negative belief that is stronger than you would like it to be! That means it is good for a lot of things!!!!
If you learn tapping, and use it at least once a day on something that’s bothering you. Examples: you wake up and your hands are aching so badly you can’t make that cake you wanted to make from scratch for a friend’s birthday. When you wake up feeling this way, it makes you sad and frustrated, so you tap on that. Or you’re going through your day and something stressful happens at work, making you feel like you’ve been run over by a Mack truck, you can go into the restroom and tap or wait until you get home later. You wake up because of a nightmare—you tap. You’re upset by something your spouse says—you tap. You’re upset because you’re not feeling well enough to go out with friends, and you need to cancel—you tap. So anything that you’ve confronted that day that’s upsetting to you, you can turn to tapping to help rid your body of unneeded extra emotional charge, which helps it feel better.
You may not learn this part if you learn/ed tapping from someone else, so I want to share this with you: After you tap on something, think about how you feel, then take pen to paper and write down whatever you know now that you didn’t before you tapped on it. Common “learnings”, as we like to call these, can be things like that’s in the past and there’s nothing I can do about it now, or new ideas about what you can do about it, or maybe your outlook has shifted. So just write down whatever comes to you after you do a round of tapping and, when you’ve written everything you can think of, close your eyes, go inside and ask yourself if there’s anything else that’s true about this situation or clear to you now that wasn’t before. And you write until nothing else comes to mind. These are your learnings, these are potent, typically neutral, non-charged statements of truth and reality that help reorient you to what’s important, to what’s true and what is. Either these statements are positive and they give you peace of mind when you read them, when you’ve accessed this wisdom deep inside you and it’s brought up to the conscious level. Or, if they’re not that neutral, they may point to the next thing to tap on, to help yourself feel better.
So tapping is the number-one thing for you to use as a self-help tool to help you manage the strong emotions and the physical pain that goes along with fibromyalgia. Check here to register for 3-Hour Workshops at my office in Laguna Hills, June 25th and August 1st. On August 16th, I’ll be holding a workshop on a technique called “muscle testing” that will help you address your symptoms on a physical level, learn what can be causing your flare ups, and be able to avoid those items. We’ll be talking more about that in next week’s blog, so please check back next Tuesday.
